What's Included In Your Care
Prenatal Care
Your prenatal care package covers everything you need throughout your pregnancy. This is where we check on your health and your baby’s development, and answer whatever’s on your mind. You’ll see us about once a month until 28 weeks, then every two weeks until 36 weeks, then weekly until your baby arrives. If you’re planning a home birth, some of these prenatal visits may take place in your home instead.
Additional Services:
Ultrasounds, bloodwork, NST (non-stress test) and IV therapy are available as needed, billed separately from your care package so you always know exactly what you’re paying for.
Preparing for Birth
Your care includes four childbirth education classes, covering what to expect and how to feel ready, along with breastfeeding support before your baby ever arrives. You’re never walking into birth without real preparation behind you.
Postpartum & Newborn Care
We stay close after birth, keeping a clinical eye on you and your baby, and completing the newborn evaluation, newborn screen, and measurements that matter. About four postpartum visits are included in your care. We check you and your baby thoroughly to make sure that everyone remains in good health.
The pull toward home birth is usually about not having to leave a state of vulnerability to go somewhere else. Labor asks a person to surrender control in a deeply physical way, and doing that in your own bed, your own bathroom, surrounded by your own smells and sounds, means nothing about the environment is asking anything of you.
No car ride while contractions are five minutes apart. No “is it time yet” anxiety about leaving too early or too late. Your other kids can wander in and out without visiting-hour rules. And afterward, there’s no transition at all, the space you labored in is just… home, already. Some people also feel there is something sacred about bringing life into the same walls where the rest of their life happens.
This is often the choice for someone who wants everything home birth offers except the responsibility of it being their own space. They still want the pool, the low lighting, the freedom to move and eat and labor undisturbed, but they don’t want to manage setup, or worry about their own carpet, or have their bedroom permanently associated with labor afterward.
There’s something psychologically real about a third space, somewhere you go specifically for this one profound thing, and then you get to leave it behind and go home changed, rather than being in the same four walls or sterile feeling. It’s also often the choice for people whose actual home doesn’t support the birth they want, small apartment, other family members there, wrong layout, without giving up the home-like feeling entirely.
Our coverage at the hospital operates on a limited monthly schedule. Due to these scheduling constraints, acceptance into our hospital birth program depends on physician availability during your birth month among many other factors. You may call to inquire about your options.
Women’s Care
Well-woman visits and care for whatever comes next, pregnant or not, available to every woman, not just our maternity clients. This includes annual exams, GYN care, routine bloodwork, along with contraception counseling and menopause care as your needs change. Our care doesn’t end when your postpartum visits do.
