About Urban Midwifery

About Urban Midwifery

We’ve been caring for families in Glendale for more than a decade, eleven years in historic Downtown Glendale. In that time, we’ve grown into a well rounded team of skilled midwives, three of whom hold doctorates in nursing practice, bringing real clinical depth to every visit, every question, and every decision you make along the way.

Members of our team hold hospital privileges at Banner University Medical Center, something few midwifery practices in Arizona can offer. It means that whether you choose a home birth, a birth center birth, or your journey leads to a hospital, you’re cared for by the same people who’ve known you all along.

Your care with us includes four childbirth education classes, ongoing prenatal visits throughout your pregnancy, and about four postpartum visits after your baby arrives, with more always available if you need them. And once you’re in your delivery window, someone is on call for you, day or night.

We welcome every family, every background, and every kind of birth.

Whatever brought you here, we’re glad you found us, and we’d love to be part of your story.

Lara El-Hoss APRN, CNM

Lara has been in the birth world since 2011, enriching her practice as a certified nurse midwife with experiences as a doula, CPM trainee, labor and delivery nurse, and correctional health nurse.

This breadth of experience informs her balanced, holistic approach to midwifery care and women’s primary care. As a woman of color with diverse ethnic and cultural heritage, she feels at home caring for women across a wide spectrum of backgrounds, faiths, and identities. She has a particular passion for supporting neurodivergent and autistic women, as well as those navigating chronic pain and chronic illness, who too often go unseen in traditional care settings. Lara’s hope is that every individual she cares for feels truly listened to, safe, and confident in their health journey.

Joanna Wilder DNP, CNM, CPM

Joanna is a mom, a midwife, a nurse practitioner, a teacher, consultant, and mentor. She has welcomed babies in many settings. She was first a nurse: 3 years in the hospital and 14 in a freestanding birth center.

Joanna initially trained in a midwifery apprenticeship and became a certified professional midwife (CPM). She had an AZ homebirth practice for eight years. After 40 years in the desert, she returned to her Oregon roots for seven years, then circled back to Arizona. Joanna attended Frontier Nursing University to become a nurse practitioner with a specialty in midwifery (CNM), graduating in 2022, and finished her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in 2024. Joanna is passionate about creating safe, inclusive spaces for individuals to feel at home in their bodies. She loves seeing folks own their journey and experience the power of inclusive, respectful care. Her midwifery model is grounded in shared decision-making and informed consent.

Bethany Mainville-Brooks DNP, FNP, CNM

Bethany Mainville-Brooks has been a Registered Nurse since 2005, practicing locally in her home state of Arizona.

Bethany became a Family Nurse Practitioner and Certified Nurse Midwife graduate from Frontier Nursing University in 2020 and 2021. Bethany recently graduated with her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in 2023, with a focus on the recognition and treatment of Perinatal Mood Disorders throughout pregnancy and postpartum. Bethany has worked as an RN in High Risk Labor and Delivery since 2005, and also has experience in Pediatric Intensive Care, Emergency/Trauma, and as an RN House Supervisor. Bethany feels that giving back to her community is key for improving the health and well-being of families, and has served as clinical faculty for Maricopa Community Colleges, Grand Canyon University, and regularly precepts for Frontier Nursing University. Outside of work, Bethany enjoys spending time with her husband and young daughter, cooking new recipes, reading, and enjoying a cup of coffee.

Marianna Holland DNP, CNM, FACNM

Marianna Holland is a 2015 graduate of Frontier Nursing University, with a master’s degree in midwifery and a Doctor of Nursing Practice.

She brings ten years of extensive experience as a labor and delivery nurse along with over a decade of midwifery experience. She is faculty at the University of Arizona, College of Health Sciences, with a focus in Arizona’s midwifery program. Marianna offers full scope women’s care including pregnancy, contraception, and menopause care. She partners with her patients to help make health decisions and is known for her compassionate, down-to-earth demeanor. She is married with two children and enjoys cooking, baking, and reading in her time off.

Audra Nelson LM, CPM, MS, RD

Audra is a dedicated midwife and Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist who brings a holistic, full-circle approach to maternal and pediatric care. With a Master’s degree in Nutrition Science specializing in neonatal and pediatric nutrition,

Audra operates on the belief that targeted nutrition therapy is foundational to body wellness and birth preparation. Her clinical practice is uniquely informed by her extensive background as a birth assistant, postpartum doula, and childbirth educator. Inspired by her great-grandmother’s legacy as a traditional southern midwife, Audra’s calling is rooted in ancestral wisdom and personal experience. As a mother who found her own empowerment through a transformative home birth, she is passionate about offering individualized, evidence-based care that honors the “village” it takes to raise a family. Audra specializes in the unrestricted comfort and autonomy of home births, advocating tirelessly to ensure high-quality, compassionate midwifery care is accessible to every childbearing person.
